Teacher Certification Checklist
Minimum requirements to enter the training pipeline:
- Bachelor's degree
- 4 year degree program from and accredited university
- Major in any relevant field is acceptable, Teaching Chinese as a Second Language major preferred
- Transcripts
- Official original university transcripts (both Chinese and English translation) bearing the seal of the issuing university
- Transcript verification in the U.S. may take two months or more.
- Notarized diploma copy
- TOEFL score or Versant test
- Requirement may be met by either of the following options:
- Minimum Internet based TOEFL score of 90 (or equivalent score on paper based test)
- Minimum overall score of 50 on the Versant OPI
- Background check
- Notarized official documentation of no criminal history
- Basic skills requirement (Math, English, etc.)
- Requirement may be met by any of the following options
- Specific university coursework with a grade of “B” or higher
- THEA exam
- Other approved standardized tests
- ACTFL Exam
- EC-12 Mandarin Chinese
After admission to the training program, candidates must complete the following items to be considered for certification:
- Classroom Observation (30 hours)
- Conducted at an approved “American School” in China
- Standard observation log must be completed and submitted
- Arrangements for classroom observation will be provided
- Pre-service training application
- Application to be completed online
- Pre-service training
- Successfully complete all of the following courses:
- Online Induction
- Foundations of Middle School and High School
- Foundations of Education
- Getting Ready of the Classroom
- Languages Other Than English
- Online interview and demonstration class with Region 4 ESC mentor
- Online Systems Training
- Successfully complete training on the use of the following online instructional platforms:
- Advanced Academics “Roads” Learning Management System
- Powerspeak Web-based Curriculum and Learning Management System
- Second Life Platform
- Virtual Internship
- Two semesters of fulltime teaching
- Must keep and provide detailed records, including lesson plans, teaching journals, and any other required documents.
